These cheddar, green onion and yogurt scones are savoury and tender – inspired by simple winter fare in the Shire and perfect for a warm and comforting elevenses.

Winter Comfort in the Shire
With the chill of winter blanketing the Shire and the fires and celebration of Yuletide fading, the hobbits settle into their hobbit holes and await the coming spring. After all the feasting and celebrating at Yuletide, the hobbits look forward to simpler fare as they make use of their well-stocked pantries and larders. While still enjoying their plethora of daily meals, the hobbits turn to the vegetables, fruits, and other foodstuffs preserved from the year before to create simple but nourishing dishes.
Cheddar, Green Onion, and Yogurt Scones for Elevenses
First and second breakfast may be over, but for a hungry hobbit there’s nothing quite like a little mid-morning snack to hold them over until luncheon. These savoury cheddar and green onion scones are the perfect treat for elevenses. Made with less butter than typical scones and plain yogurt instead of cream or buttermilk, these scones have a light and fluffy texture. Sharp cheddar and fresh green onions add a sharp oniony bite which pairs perfectly with the slight tang from the yogurt. Served warm with a bit of butter, these savoury scones are the perfect elevenses treat.

Ingredients
Greek yogurt: This recipe was formulated using a thick Greek yogurt. The yogurt is blended with water and forms the liquid that binds the dough together. If using another type of plain yogurt, you may need to adjust the amount of water depending on how thick or thin the yogurt is.
Cheddar: I used shredded cheddar cheese, although you could use whatever type of cheese you prefer.
Green onions: This recipe uses finely chopped green onions, or scallions, although you could use chives, either fresh or dried, instead.

How to Make Cheddar, Green Onion, and Yogurt Scones
Make the dough
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and kosher salt. Stir the dry ingredients together. Grate or cut the butter into small cubes and add to the mixing bowl. Crumble the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles small pea-sized pieces. Add the shredded cheese and chopped green onions.
In a separate bowl whisk together the water and yogurt until smooth. Add to the dry ingredients and mix until the dough comes together.

Shape the scones
Turn the dough out onto the counter. Dust with flour and lightly knead a few times until the dough comes together. Pat into a smooth ball about 1 inch thick. Cut into 6 wedges for large scones or 8 wedges for medium sized scones.
Bake the scones
Brush the tops of the scones with cream (or buttermilk or milk). Bake for 17 to 20 minutes until golden brown. Slide the parchment from the baking sheet onto a cooling rack or counter. Serve the scones warm with butter and enjoy!
